Bridgeton council approves red-light cameras
Motorists driving through Bridgeton soon will have to deal with red-light cameras at certain intersections.
The Bridgeton City Council has approved a contract with American Traffic Solutions to provide the systems. The cameras use both still photos and video to catch violators running red lights. ATS provides camera systems for Hazelwood, Florissant, Arnold and other local cities.
The council already has provided ATS with a list of intersections to be considered for the cameras. However, the final decision won’t be made until ATS completes a traffic study. The company also will consult with the Bridgeton Police Department.
Warning signs will alert drivers to the cameras.
“A Bridgeton police officer will make the decision (on who will receive a ticket),” said Mayor Conrad Bowers. “No ticket is printed automatically.”
Possible violations will be submitted to police department personnel for consideration. An officer will make the determination if a violation has been committed.
Each violation carries a $90 fine, which is the standard rate for a red-light violation in the city of Bridgeton.
