Pueblo City Council hardly paused to pass red light measures Tuesday.
In separate, unanimous votes, council approved a measure to install cameras at five intersections in Pueblo, then set the penalties for motorists whose pictures are snapped as they run red lights. First, council approved a contract with American Traffic Solutions to install the cameras. The company also will charge the city a monthly fee, which will range from $5,000 to $5,600. The city anticipates the program to be self-supporting. Any driver photographed running a red light will be issued a $75 ticket. The city listed seven intersections that are the top contenders for the cameras, which can be removed and relocated as necessary. The intersections are:
- U.S. 50 West at Elizabeth Street. Northern and Prairie avenues. Pueblo Boulevard and Northern Avenue.
- Colorado 47 and Dillon Drive. 29th and Elizabeth Street.
- Eighth Street and Hudson Avenue.
- U.S. 50 West and Fortino Boulevard when the current road construction is complete.
The $75 ticket was part of a second measure that council passed to bring the penalties and the procedures for using the lights into compliance with state law. The ordinance sets the tickets at $75 and requires the city to post signs near intersections warning approaching motorists that red light enforcement is in use. The agreement with American Traffic Solutions was part of council's consent agenda and was approved in a blanket motion with a number of other items. The ordinance setting the fines and procedures passed with no public comment or comment from council.
