PUEBLO CITY Council has approved a plan to install cameras at select intersections where red-light runners cause an inordinate number of traffic crashes.
The city will contract with a private firm, American Traffic Solutions, to install and operate the cameras. The cameras will be motion-sensitive to vehicles that enter an intersection after the traffic signal turns red, so drivers who come to a full stop and then make a legal turn should not be cited.
Tickets will be sent to the registered owners of vehicles running the stoplights. The fine is $75. Intersections being monitored will be posted with warning signs.
The city will pay the company a monthly fee of between $5,000 and $5,600. City officials anticipate the program will be self-sustaining through the fines.
There are seven intersections that are top contenders for the program:
Red-light runners are a real problem, and if the cameras can stop the practice, so much the better. Remember, there’s one simple way not to get caught: Obey the law.
